The Scoop | Week of November 30
Published by One Sotheby's at Tuesday, November 30th, 2021
Welcome to The Scoop’s second of two editions for Miami art week. The art-filled extravaganza, which runs through December 5, marks the unofficial start to peak season here in South Florida. Its main fair Art Basel Miami Beach ushered in a new era for our region when it debuted in 2002. Throughout the years, several satellite fairs, luxury brands of all types, and art galleries outside the area have joined the annual pilgrimage that attracts art dealers, collectors, curators, and enthusiastic crowds from around the world. Here’s a start for where to go and what to see during this wonderful week.
NADA Fair
NADA returns to Ice Palace Studios for its 19th edition through December 4. Marking its largest fair to date, more than 170 exhibitors, including 43 first-timers, are participating in Galleries, NADA Projects and Artists’ Book Publishers sections. Join talks and performances during NADA Presents, and support the series by purchasing Nikki Maloof’s limited-edition print shown here.
NFT MVP
The NFT (non-fungible token) just might be the week’s MVP. A slew of events is planned around the new digital investment. From December 2-4, Art Basel Miami Beach hosts a speaker series “Humans + Machines: NFTs and the Ever-Evolving World of Art,” and “Aku World: Miami” activates its interactive experience starring the NFT astronaut in Wynwood.
Chanel Centennial
It wouldn’t be Art Basel without fashion brands. Chanel commissioned Es Devlin’s “Five Echoes,” a large-scale installation in the Design District to commemorate Chanel No. 5 fragrance’s centennial. His multisensory labyrinth incorporates light, sound, and a temporary forest of 2,000 trees. Chanel’s drone light show takes place on the beach behind Faena on December 1.
Members Only
Membership has its rewards. American Express’s Platinum Studio pops up at the Miami Beach Edition hotel December 2-4. The curated experience features artworks for sale via Artsy, dishes by Italian powerhouse Carbone, Equinox fitness classes and wellness events, and a beach concert by Lizzo. Soho Beach House’s oceanfront tent bashes are in full swing, too.
New Wave Art Wknd
Hop in the car (or aboard the Brightline train) to Palm Beach for the fourth edition of New Wave Art Wknd from December 3-5. Gallery owner Sarah Gavlak founded the platform to champion artists in underrepresented communities. This year’s program features panel discussions, tours of private collections, and a brunch at Beth Rudin DeWoody’s Bunker Artspace.
Street Art
Miami takes street art seriously. For its second anniversary, the Museum of Graffiti presents “Defaced” with French graffiti and tattoo artist Fuzi and collaborates with Puma for custom kicks and breakdance battles. Wynwood Walls debuts 13 new installations under the theme “Agents of Change.” It hosts an artist talk on December 1 at 7 p.m.
